Four years ago, I compared the complexity of managing an oncology practice to operating a nuclear-powered submarine, which I did in a previous chapter of life. If that was the benchmark then, 2025 has seen us move from navigating the depths to executing a high-altitude, mid-air rebuild.
The mantra of “building the plane while flying it” is common in healthcare, but at OneOncology, we’ve taken it a step further. This year, the Strategic Operations team wasn’t just building the plane; we were ripping out the engines, upgrading the avionics, and retraining the crew — all while maintaining cruising altitude and ensuring our passengers — providers and their staff — never were distracted from what matters most: taking care of their patients.
Mastering Complex Transitions
Our transition of New York Oncology Hematology was the ultimate proof of this agility. Moving a 35-doctor, multi-specialty powerhouse from a legacy network to the OneOncology platform over a single weekend was a feat of operational precision. This involved the simultaneous cutover of over 100 software applications including multiple EMRs and the deployment of 900 pieces of hardware. We achieved a seamless transfer with zero patient impact, proving that our team has evolved beyond simply managing complexity — we are now mastering it.
Scaling Through Teamwork
The extraction and integration of SunState Medical Specialists (SMS) represented an even larger frontier. This was a massive, company-wide effort involving hundreds of people across multiple vendors, consultants, and both the OneOncology and SMS teams. Together, we worked to integrate — through the radical simplification of technology, infrastructure, and process — a loose federation of approximately 100 providers (including urologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and surgeons) and 1,000 employees practicing at more than 100 locations across Florida. Through this simplification, we built a new RCM, IT, HR, compliance, finance, and operational platform — a launchpad for enhanced patient care and growth. This foundation was so effective that we successfully integrated our first practice into the SMS fold within 60 days.
The Strategic Ops Engine: Reaching Every Corner
While these major transitions rightly captured headlines, they were only a piece of our much larger momentum. In total, we successfully executed about 20 integration projects this year, making 2025 the busiest and most productive year in our history. This was made possible by a core team of strategic operations experts working hand-in-glove with functional leaders across OneOncology. Together, we bring the full power of the OneOncology platform to independent practices in all corners of the country.
Growth and the Patient-First Mission
Whether it was extracting Ventura County Hematology Oncology Specialists from a hospital partnership to launch a brand-new infusion service line or integrating the first medical oncology practice into the Chesapeake Urology Associates, a United Urology Group affiliate practice, our focus remained the same: customer service. In our world, the “customer” is the physician. By removing the administrative burden and operational friction of these transitions, we allow our doctors to do what they do best — provide world-class care.
As we look forward, our team is ready for the road ahead. We have the blueprint, the technology, and the cross-functional expertise to tackle even larger missions. We have built the infrastructure for the future of specialty care, and we are ready for what comes next.
